Library reaches out to Lujiazui office workers with self-serve machines
THREE 24-hour self-serve library machines were set up in office buildings in Pudong's Lujiazui area, according to the Oriental Morning Post.
People who work in One Lujiazui Business Center, China Development Bank Tower and Lujiazui Software Garden can get the library cards and borrow books on their own by using their ID cards, the report said.
The borrower receives the library card after scanning his ID and paying a 100 yuan (US$16) deposit. With the card, a user can borrow five books at one time.
Ling Zhirong, director of Lujiazui Library, told the newspaper that each machine can hold about 900 books. He said about 500 to 600 books were borrowed per month from each machine.
"We used to install the machines in residential complexes, but it appears to have not so much effect. But they are very popular in office buildings," Ling told the newspaper.
An office worker surnamed Gu told the newspaper she could reserve the book she wanted on the Lujiazui Library's website and choose the machine where she could pick it up. They send her an e-mail when the book has arrived.
"The other great thing is I don't need to worry about overdue fees as I can renew the book online," Gu was quoted as saying.
