Light at end of tunnel for motorcylists

SHANGHAI’S Transport Commission has promised that it will take measures to ensure it is better prepared to transport motorcyclists across the Huangpu River when ferry service is suspended.

The pledge came after hundreds of two-wheeled commuters were forced to take the risk of riding through tunnels in heavy fog on Thursday because trucks that were supposed to take bikes through did not arrive on time for the morning rush hour.

Ferry service was suspended around 7am on Thursday due to low visibility after the weather forecaster issued a fog alert.

“It was dangerous … the ground was slippery,” said Li Ming, a local legislator. Huang Yiyi, the secretary general of the Shanghai Transport Commission, told local legislators: “The poor communication between the transport authority, police and weather authority is to blame for the failure to carry out the emergency plan,” adding that the commission should take full responsibility for the failure.

The commission will make sure local moving companies put trucks on standby when the city’s weather authority predicts that fog will hamper traffic the next day, Huang said.

The trucks will transport the motorcycles through the city’s three major tunnels: Fuxing Road, Xiangyin Road and Dalian Road. Buses will transport the riders to the other side.
