Longest Huangpu River tunnel under construction

THE boring of the longest Huangpu River tunnel kicked off today and the vehicle tunnel will open to traffic in 2014 to reduce traffic pressure on the overhead system in the city's Xinzhuang area.

Construction authorities say they will build two river tunnels, one for Zhoujiazui Road in Puxi and the other for the Suburban Ring Road.

Congestion on the elevated Humin Road and other artery roads in Xinzhuang is expected to ease when the 5-billion-yuan tunnel is completed in 2014, said the project contractor.

The tunnel will connects Xinzhuang in Minhang District with Nanqiao in Fengxian District. It will enable residents in the outlying town of Nanqiao to reach Xinzhuang in 5 minutes' drive.

Construction officials also said that one of the twin tubes for the city's widest tunnel under the Huangpu River will be built by the end of this month. The Changjiang Road Tunnel is expected to relieve road congestion in northeastern Shanghai due to fast-growing freight traffic.

They said the new tunnel will allow them to shut down the overused Outer Ring Road Tunnel for a major overhaul.
