Lots to do in Shanghai during upcoming May Day holiday

SCENIC spots and parks across the city will present a raft of activities from a barbecue festival and flower exhibitions to a root carving display through the upcoming May Day holiday.

The Shanghai Ocean Aquarium in the Lujiazui area will host a special exhibition on fish from Africa. They include African lungfish, African butterflyfish and longnosed elephant fish. Many of the fish have brilliant colors.

Visitors will be able to learn about different African fish and there will be performances with an African flavor like dances at the aquarium. The exhibition will start Thursday, the first day of the three-day holiday, and run to May 13.

More than 4,500 azaleas of over 100 varieties will be in full bloom at the Shanghai Botanical Garden during the holiday, most in red and white. The peak time for the blossoms lasts through early May.

A spring forest music, barbecue and camping festival will take place at the Chongming Dongping Forest Park on Thursday and Friday. Tents can be rented, and the event will take place starting at 5:30pm. Grilled foods can be purchased at the park.

The Shanghai Science and Technology Museum in the Pudong New Area is hosting a polar science exhibition, and the showcase will run through May 22.

The Haiwan tourism area on Jinhuitang Road in Fengxian District invites people to fly kites, enjoy barbecue and take a boat tour during the holiday.

The Shanghai Museum of Glass in Baoshan District will host a Czech Glass Art exhibition from Thursday to Saturday, while the Fangta Park will host an African root carving culture display through May 7.

The Shanghai Baoshan International Folk Art Museum will stage an exhibition on the instruction books of Chinese traditional operas, which are similar to today’s program lists.
