Lots to do in city over Spring Festival

A variety of events including temple fairs, exhibitions and lantern shows will be staged at scenic spots across Shanghai through the upcoming Spring Festival holiday, inviting tourists to experience the most traditional customs of Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations, the city's tourism authorities said.

The Shanghai Zoo in Changning District will host a zodiac culture festival during the holiday. It displays 13 rare species of galliformes, an order of ground-feeding birds including golden pheasants and black curassows to mark the Year of the Rooster.

There is an exhibition featuring the eggs, feather and specimen of pheasant animals which allows people to learn about the habits and living conditions of them. Visitors are also invited to capture 185 species of birds living at the zoo in a shutterbug contest.

The Guyi Garden in Jiading will stage dragon-lion dances and stilt parades, and visitors are able to write chunlian (spring couplet) and learn how to paint Lunar New Year pictures, or nianhua.

Craftsmen will display paper cutting, dough modeling, shadow play and sugar painting, and the garden's plum blossom is in the best appreciation time during the festival.

The Shanghai Botanical Garden in Xuhui District will host a rare plant exhibition through the holiday, featuring about 300 plants that are rarely seen such as the world's smallest pineapple.

A temple fair at the Shanghai Happy Valley in Songjiang District will introduce traditional drum performances from Jiangzhou County, Shanxi Province and dragon-lion dances in Pudong New Area's Sanlin Town during the holiday. Both are intangible cultural heritage in China.

The Chenshan Botanic Garden in Songjiang will host a spring blossom exhibition featuring 49 species of peonies as well as tulips and lilies, which will turn the garden into a sea of flowers. Visitors are able to win gifts by guessing riddles related with plants.

Destinations with warm temperature and pure air quality are the most popular during the holiday, travel agencies said.

Sanya, Xiamen, and Kunming are among the hottest domestic destinations, while beach resorts including Phuket, Bali Island, Cheju and Maldives are the most popular overseas destinations for their good air quality and mild temperature, according to online travel operator Tuniu.

Shanghai Spring Tour said Australia and New Zealand which are in the off-season of China are extremely popular with almost all tour packages during the holiday sold out last month, and an eight-day northern light appreciation tour to Lapland in Finland is a black horse among the Spring Festival tour packages as many local tourists are attracted by the beauty of polar light, the travel agency said.
