Men strip on platform during Metro rush hour

TWO men stripped off on the platform of the Jing’an Temple Metro station during rush hour yesterday morning.

Commuters on Metro Line 2 were confronted by the sight of one man stripped to his waist and the other wearing only a pair of shoes.

They were quickly taken away by police and did not affect the operation of the subway, said officials.

According to a security staff member at the station, the men were a father and son staging a protest.

The Shanghai natives shed their clothing to gain attention for a housing demolition conflict they are involved in with local authorities, he said.

Another witness said the men were emotional and had threatened to jump off the platform.

The member of security staff, who declined to give his name, said the two men had staged a similar protest the night before, were held by police then and had just been released in the morning.

They repeated the strip yesterday morning while the mother of the family stood beside them, he said.

Police did not comment on these claims.

Meanwhile, Metro Line 3 suffered a half-an-hour delay between the Zhenping Road and Zhongshan Park stations about 2pm yesterday, due to a train door malfunction.
