Mercury set to drop this week, gales on the cards

Two strong cold fronts are expected to drive down the temperatures this week, with Friday likely to be as low as 1 degree Celsius, weather forecasters said yesterday.

Gales are also predicted for the week. And the sky will be mostly cloudy under high pressure, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.

The meteorological winter is also round the corner, but the official declaration will likely take a while, said Zhu Jiehua, a chief service officer at the weather bureau.

Meteorological winter officially sets in after the average temperature stays below 10 degrees for five consecutive days. Shanghai usually enters winter in meteorological term in early December, Zhu said.

The city started to feel the chill yesterday afternoon with the arrival of a cold front.

The mercury dropped to a low of 12-13 degrees Celsius yesterday afternoon in suburban districts like Qingpu and Songjiang, pushed down by strong wind.

The bureau issued a blue gale alert, the lowest of a four-level system, at 2:20pm yesterday, warning people to take precautions and stay away from advertising billboards and temporary structures, and urging bicycle riders to be careful.

The lowest temperature yesterday was 13.8 degrees recorded at the benchmark Xujiahui Observatory. It should drop to a low of 8 degrees today.

Tomorrow should be cloudy to overcast with the mercury hovering between 6 and 14 degrees.

The low temperature will remain the same on Wednesday, but the high will drop by 2 degrees.

The second cold front will hit the city mid-week, further dropping temperature, Zhu said.

Thursday should be sunny to cloudy with the mercury reaching a low of 3 degrees. The high is forecasted to be 8 degrees.

On Friday, the temperature will plummet to 1 degree with the high tipped to be below 10 degrees.

Weathermen urged locals to cover themselves appropriately.
