Metro has capacityto improve

THE city's Metro operator will drastically increase passenger capacity to cope with crammed trains by adding carriages and new trains.

It said yesterday that renovation of Line 1's 53 trains would be finished by the end of this year, with all trains having eight carriages.

Each eight-car train can carry 3,300 passengers, 800 more than now.

There will be another 32 trains on Line 2 by next May when the line opens its extension at both eastern and western ends just ahead of the Shanghai 2010 World Expo.

Authorities said yesterday that 18 seven-car trains for Line 8 would arrive in the city by the end of this year.

Meanwhile, police seized 442 banned items, such as fireworks, gasoline and corrosive material, within two days at 30 checkpoints on five lines.
