Metro hits new record as 7m go underground

MORE than 7 million people used the city Metro network yesterday, a record since the first subway opened in 1995.

The People's Square station was more congested than usual because the next stop along Line 2, Nanjing Road E., was closed and Shanghai Shentong Metro Group warned that it could be the same story today.

The Nanjing Road E. station is off limits to passengers from 3:30pm each day until October 3.

The last passenger peak was on September 21, the day before the traditional Mid-Autumn Festival, when the network handled 6.96 million passengers.

During the holiday, there will be extra ticket booths at Metro stations near the World Expo site or on routes to it.

The Nanjing Road E. station is closed to avoid overcrowding as it is near the busy business hub and the Bund. The People's Square station is likely to face a huge passenger turnout as a result.

Meanwhile, today will be a busy day at the railway stations too, with about 260,000 travelers expected.

Five services have been added to the Shanghai-Nanjing high-speed route.
