Metro makes history as China’s 1st to cross a provincial border
SHANGHAI’S Metro yesterday became the first in China to cross provincial boarder, with the opening of a new stretch of Line 11 extending to Kunshan City in neighboring Jiangsu Province.
It takes 70 minutes from Huaqiao Station in Kunshan to downtown Xujiahui, with tickets priced at 7 yuan (US$1.15).
Trains started running in Huaqiao at 9:30am. Most of the passengers were seniors taking an outing to Jiangsu.
The section has three overground stations in Jiangsu, connected to Anting Station in Jiading District.
Line 11 now has 72 kilometers of track, the longest line in the city Metro network.
Six bus routes have been launched, most connecting the new stations to neighborhoods and junctions in Kunshan.
Tourism Bus No. 7 picks up passengers at Huaqiao Station and heads to Jinxi Ancient Town and Zhouzhuang Watertown, at a cost of 5 yuan.
The service runs every 80 minutes, but this proved too much of a wait for some visitors from Shanghai.
“We saw the information on TV last night, and came here to check whether it’s convenient to reach nearby tourist spots,” said a senior surnamed Zhu, who arrived at Huaqiao Station at around 11am.
After waiting half an hour in vain for the Tourism Bus No. 7, Zhu and his partner decided to take a stroll around the area before heading back.
Shanghai Metro transport cards and senior cards can be used on the Line 11 Huaqiao section and holders are entitled to transfer discounts.
Trains run on Line 11 between 5:30am and 11:51pm. On the center section of Jiading Xincheng and Sanlin stations, trains run every five minutes during morning and evening rush hours, while other sections along the line see a train every 10 minutes.
The first train leaves Huaqiao Station at 5:40am and the last departs at 9:32pm.
