Metro network fast expanding, 14 lines by 2014
A new round of Metro construction has begun in Shanghai to add four lines and extensions to the city's existing network, the Metro authority announced today.
By 2014 the city will have 14 subways in operation with a total length of 500 kilometers.
New projects for Metro Line 12, Line 13 and Line 16 are already under construction. Line 12 will run from the city?ˉs northeast to its southwest with 32 stations along its 40-kilometer subway across eight districts.
Line 13 is a 16-kilometer link between suburban Jiading and downtown Jing'an districts with 14 stations. Three of its stations underneath the 2010 World Expo site were put to use during the world fair last year. They were closed afterwards.
Line 16 will mainly serve Pudong's Nanhui area with 13 stations, connecting Line 2 and Line 7 at Longyang Road Station and ending at the seaside Lingang New Town in the southeast tip of Pudong.
The other project is an extension of Metro Line 11, starting from Jiangsu Road station, across the Huangpu River, and reaching Luoshan Road Station in Pudong, the Metro officials said.
