Metro to airport stalls
A SIGNAL glitch caused long delays on Metro Line 2 yesterday morning, sparking trouble for subway riders trying to get to the Pudong International Airport.
The problem occurred on Line 2's eastern extension between the Lingkong Road station and the Pudong International Airport station about 9:30am. Service did not resume until about noon.
"Service was not fully suspended," a spokeswoman with the Metro operator said yesterday. "The interval time between trains was prolonged to about 20 minutes."
The spokeswoman did not say how many passengers were affected by the glitch.
The Metro operator said there was not a massive number of passengers stranded at the four stations of the eastern extension.
It's the third breakdown on Line 2 within a week. The trip to the airport was also affected last Wednesday due to mechanical problems.
Though some commuters said such accidents were understandable as the extension, still in pilot operation, to the airport opened on April 8, others complained about the frequent malfunctions.
"It's really bad for those going to the airport as they have to figure out another way there in a short time," said someone on Metro Fans Club, a well-known cyber community in Shanghai.
Metro officials said they released information about the delays at stations along Line 2 and reminded passengers to take other transportation to the airport.
