Metro to lend more umbrellas
HUNDREDS more umbrellas will be made available for subway passengers to borrow even though about 40 percent of them may never be seen again in Metro stations, Metro management officials said.
At the start of this year about 70 percent of commuters who borrowed umbrellas returned them, but the return rate dropped to 60 percent when the summer rainy season began.
There are 30,000 umbrellas circulating and most major stations such as People's Square station keep about 20 umbrellas.
The umbrellas are offered to passengers free of charge and require no deposit, but users need to leave their telephone numbers.
Metro employees will remind commuters who borrow umbrellas to return them within a week to any other stations. If they don't, the Metro will contact the passenger.
