Ministry looks to app model
EVEN though China’s Ministry of Transport has banned private cars from offering unlicensed taxi services via smartphone apps such as Uber, it has acknowledged that the model has brought customer benefits.
“Banning private cars from using the apps is for safety reasons,” the ministry said on its website this month. “But the innovative service model has played a positive role in meeting the high-end and differentiated market,” it added.
The ministry promised a “breakthrough” in creating a “modern transportation industry” but didn’t give details, reported Xinhua new agency.
The Shanghai Transport Commission said last week that it is studying a plan of introducing a “car booking service” for Shanghai.
Licensed rental cars use taxi booking apps like Didi Taxi and Kuaidi Taxi.
