More rain, mercury to dip

THE drizzles are here to stay, at least this week, with temperatures likely to be down to the teens, weather forecasters said yesterday.

Yesterday was also the beginning of the solar term Lidong, or the advent of winter.

There may be a brief respite from the rains on Tuesday but it will return late on Wednesday.

On the start of Lidong yesterday, the city received some rain and chilly conditions brought by a south-moving cold front. The high temperature was just 16 degrees Celsius, nearly 10 degrees lower than Saturday. Temperatures are likely to stay below 20 degrees for at least five days, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.

The gray skies and the wet conditions will continue today but will give way to clear skies later in the day. A high pressure will dominate the city tomorrow and on Wednesday before the rains return.

The mercury is expected to range between 13 and 17 degrees until Wednesday. It will get slightly warmer on Thursday and Friday with temperatures around 15 and 19 degrees.

The weather bureau said with the onset of Lidong, winter is likely to begin around December 3. Winter will officially be in the temperatures remain below 10 degrees for five straight days.

The cold air brought in some pollutants into the city yesterday. By 6pm, the air quality index climbed to 189 — just 12 points below the heavily polluted level. There may be some respite from pollution today.
