Neighborhood gets online water testing
SHANGHAI Water Authority yesterday began testing tap water quality around the clock in a suburb neighborhood previously plagued by poor quality.
The trial operation may be expanded across the city, said officials.
The authority installed the online testing device at the Yiting Jiayuan Community in the Pudong New Area’s Zhoupu Town.
The device draws tap water into a water quality testing machine and discharges it back into the water tank after testing.
The system can check for cloudiness, temperature and the amount of chlorine and send the data through a 3G system to a nearby water plant.
The plant will receive an alarm if the data fails to meet the standard and react immediately to improve the water quality and check the source of pollution, said officials.
The updating data and quality details are displayed on an LED screen at the entrance of the community for residents to check.
They can also scan a QR Code beside the screen to check the water quality on their mobile phones.
“We feel more reassured because the water authority is going to show the water quality data to residents,” said Shen Yan, chairman of the residents’ committee of the neighborhood.
The neighborhood once took water from nearby rivers for its tap water and suffered from poor water quality for years.
It changed its water source to the Qingcaosha Reservoir recently.
The city’s tap water mainly comes from the Qingcaosha and Chenhang reservoirs at the mouth of Yangtze River.
The water authority has picked up six neighborhoods, mostly in suburban districts, for the trial.
