New app uses GPS to find nearest Metro station

SHANGHAI Metro has updated its app to offer travel information in a more user-friendly and timely manner.

The Shanghai Metro app 3.0 version is now available for free download for Android system while the service on Apple system is expected to be ready in days. And the English version is also available.

English speakers could use the Chinese characters "上海地铁官方指南" (in pinyin: Shang Hai Di Tie Guan Fang Zhi Nan) to find the official app provided by Shanghai Metro and then shift the app to the English mode after downloading.

Officials said it is a good tool to help new travelers navigate the city's subway network. Through GPS functions, the user can get information on the nearest subway station to his or her location and the approximate distance through the app.

Realtime traffic information is also available now on the new app with green, yellow and red colors respectively standing for smooth, congested or restricted traffic, and a service breakdown on various stretches of the tube system.

Timely travel tips such as prolonged service hours on holidays and cultural events held at some Metro stops would also be broadcast through the app.

Metro riders could also get locations of public and commercial facilities inside Metro stations such as ATM machines, bookstores and convenience stores on the app.

The navigation design for the updated app is also streamlined to make it easier to use, the Metro operator said.
