New battle against termites has started and is tougher than last year's : experts

THE "annual battle" between local residents and invading termites has started now, exterminators warned today.

The recent sultry and humid weather is considered the catalyst for their emergence, and the annoying pests have been spotted in huge number at old wooden buildings across the city, they said.

Even some cement buildings fell into victim to the invasion of the pests.

This year's termite outbreak started later, but is more serious than last year, said Shanghai Xufang Greenery Co in Xuhui District.

It received the first call for help on April 3, when the temperature approached 30 degrees Celsius.

"It is the busiest time of exterminators, and these two days, when we just hang up a phone call, another call rings," said a worker of Xufang surnamed Zhao.

Those who call for help usually need to wait two to three days because there are not enough exterminators, she said. Some expats who rented wooden houses also called for help after the diminutive pests are seen.

The company has received over 100 calls for help today.

Some termites fly into residents' homes from streetside trees, and some make colony at wooden houses, Zhao said.

The Yongjia Road, Anfu Road and Huaihai Rd M. which gather large number of aging wooden structures are hotbeds of termites and they report the largest number of the insatiable insects, Xufang said.

There is no respite for other exterminators.

"At some homes calling for help, more than 10,000 termites are seen, and residents were very scared," said an exterminator surnamed Liu with the Nanfang Greenery and Termite Control Service Center in Huangpu District.

They love lights and appear at night, and even invade high-rise office buildings, he said.

The conflict should continue until July, said Liu.
