New brand of tourism touted

THE China International Travel Mart, which opened yesterday, has earmarked some destinations including Taiwan and the United States as potential places suitable for "in-depth" tourism.

"In-depth" tourism is a package where visitors get more immersed in the culture and history of the region, and the range of activities is far wider than mere sightseeing.

Tourists from the Chinese mainland have been able to take part in group tours of Taiwan and the US since 2008.

At present, most of packages cover 10 cities in the two destinations, and tourists try to cram as much as possible into their trips, which generally last for about a week.

Exhibitors said that after about two years' operation, the market has matured, thus "superficial-style" packages would be replaced gradually.

Taiwan is now promoting its farmland and forest packages to Chinese mainland tourists. They can interact with animals, try archery and grass skating - a kind of skiing on grass - and taste fresh lamb and beef at about 10 farms on the island.

Meanwhile, the western US is also promoting "in-depth" packages. Las Vegas has attracted more than 1,000 tourists who will participate in its Spring Festival event next year.

The tourists, who are expected to stay in the city for three days, will enjoy both traditional Chinese and Vegas culture.

The event will be held once a year in Las Vegas to attract more tourists, the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority said yesterday.

The travel mart is being held at the Shanghai New International Expo Center in the Pudong New Area and will last until Sunday.
