New ring road to open on Tuesday

THE final section of the city’s elevated Middle Ring Road in the Pudong New Area is set to open to the public on Tuesday after more than two years of construction, traffic police said yesterday.

The 9.4-kilometer section runs from the Jungong Road Tunnel to the intersection of Middle Gaoke Road and Shenjiang Road.

Though the road itself will open to traffic, four pairs of access ramps will remain closed for the time being to allow for the completion of related projects, said Guo Hengming, an engineer with the Pudong traffic police.

“Shanghai’s elevated road system will be much improved after the elevated Middle Ring Road goes into use,” he told Shanghai Daily.

“The new road will give commuters between Puxi and Pudong an alternative to Yangpu Bridge, the Xiangyin Road Tunnel and Wuzhou Avenue, which are always packed during the rush hour,” he said.

The completion of the route is also good news for people in northeastern parts of the city, as they can now access Pudong Airport without having to exit the elevated road, Guo said.
