New shuttle service to bridge Metro gap
A new shuttle bus, No.1122, was launched at the Luheng Road Transportation Hub in Pudong yesterday morning to ferry residents between their homes and Luheng Road Station of Metro Line 8.
It is part of the authority’s latest effort to clamp down on the high number of illegal taxis and motorbikes operating in the suburban areas, and bridge the “last kilometer disconnect,” police said.
By “disconnect,” the police mean that as the city grows more and more residents have to walk a significant distance between their homes and Metro stations, supermarkets, hospitals and schools.
“The new route is very convenient for us, as it covers places the other shuttle buses do not cover,” a 62-year-old resident, surnamed Gao, told Shanghai Daily.
Gao moved to a residential complex in Sanlin Town about four years ago and said the transportation service in the area has been woefully inadequate; the complex, which comprises 12 communities, was served by just one bus until yesterday.
“Most people travel around on illegal motorbikes, which costs 5 yuan (75 US cents) from my home to the Metro station,” he said.
To clamp down on illegal taxis and motorbikes, the local police talked with local residents to assess their transportation needs. They then worked with Pudong Shangnan Bus company to launch the shuttle bus service.
“By providing a new transportation alternative, we aim to reduce the market for illegal services,” police said, adding that they will continue to target illegal taxis and motorbikes in the area.
Police seized four motorbikes near the transportation hub yesterday morning, after their owners were seen illegally taking passengers.
Local commuters welcomed the new service, but some complained that its hours of operation are insufficient.
“The last bus leaves at 8:40pm, but the last Metro train arrives at Luheng Road Station at about 11pm,” Gao said. “I hope they can extend the shuttle bus’s operating hours.”
The bus company said it will adjust the timetable to suit the needs of passengers in future.
