New tunnel a key link for Expo
THE only tunnel linking Shanghai World Expo sites on both sides of the Huangpu River will open to traffic this month.
Two of the four planned lanes of the Xizhang South Road Tunnel will open first, according to Labor Daily report today. The tunnel is still being constructed but when it goes into service eight bus routes will use it after the Dapu Road Tunnel, which opened in 1970 on the upstream of the river, is closed for major repair works.
The Xizhang South Road Tunnel will be the first tunnel in Shanghai to have three ramps connecting central areas of the World Expo sites, two in Pudong and one in Puxi.
After the opening of 2010 World Expo on May 1, the tunnel will be used exclusively for Expo traffic and will be handling more than 60,000 visitors an hour.
The renovated four-lane Dapu Road Tunnel will reopen next year with double its current capacity.
