No respite from scorching heat as mercury crosses 40 in parts of city

THE mercury in parts of Shanghai crossed 40 degrees Celsius yesterday, topping Wednesday's highest temperature to become the hottest day of the year.
It was the second consecutive day when the mercury surpassed last year's peak temperature.
The high was 38.4 degrees Celsius in downtown yesterday. Suburban Jiading District recorded a whopping 40.2 degrees at 1:45pm - the hottest part of the city.
It was relatively cooler in Lingang New City in the southernmost part of the city which recorded just 30 degrees.
It is expected to be sunny and cloudy today with the temperature hovering between a low of 27 and a high of 35.
The city took steps to provide some relief to sanitary workers and traffic assistants.
"We can rest from 11:30am to 2pm when the temperature moves above 35 degrees," Lu Yali, a sanitary worker on Shaanxi Road N., said yesterday. "Each of us get a bottle of salt soda water on such hot days."
The excessive heat also lifted the city's power usage to a peak of 27,510 megawatts at 1:40pm yesterday - a record for the year, the Shanghai Power Electric Co Ltd said. About 700 households in Pudong's Jinqiao area suffered from power cut at 9:40pm yesterday due to transformer breakdown. Power was resumed two hours later.
