Numbers to help avoid road delays
CITY traffic officials are planning to introduce a congestion index through multi-media platforms to help motorists avoid delays.
Shanghai Traffic Information Center has begun releasing the index on a trial basis on its Weibo account at weibo.com/u/2609613962.
The center said it was planning to broadcast the index on TV and radio platforms soon.
The index system uses numbers up to 100 with a bigger number indicating a worsening of traffic conditions.
Center officials said an index above 50 would indicate major congestion and when it reached near 100 that would mean serious hold-ups.
Currently, the city's overhead signs adopt a three-color guidance system with red, yellow and green representing different traffic conditions.
The number index system would be an improvement, officials said, by allowing motorists to gain a more accurate picture of changing traffic conditions.
