Outlying transport hubs in works

THE city will start building 14 new transport hubs close to large residential areas this year, mainly in suburban districts, to help with traffic flow as the outlying regions gain more population.

Bus stations, parking lots and cab stands, as well as passages to Metro stations, will be included in the hubs, said traffic officials. Two hubs are expected to be opened within a year, officials said.

City transport and port administration officials said the hubs will be built in seven districts, including Jiading, Qingpu and Songjiang. Located nearby are large complexes where budget homes were built. The residential areas each are expected to have more than 100,000 inhabitants.

The new lots are expected to encourage more people to take buses and subways to downtown, said traffic officials.

The new facilities are also designed to offer tourists and residents easier access to public transport while traveling around the Yangtze River Delta region. Visitors from Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces can arrive at the park-and-ride lots from expressways and use public transport to enter the city.

The city has built more parking lots, especially park-and-ride services, to curb the use of private cars. The parking fee usually runs no more than 15 yuan (US$2.35) per day, well under that charged at commercial lots.
