Packages offered to visa-free travelers
LOCAL airlines are offering hotel booking, car rentals and tourism guide services to foreign passengers taking advantage of Shanghai's extension of visa-free stays to 72 hours starting next week.
The airline passengers from 45 countries eligible for the extended visa-free policy can buy ticket packages from local carriers that allow them to travel to neighboring Hangzhou and Suzhou cities or rent a vehicle to tour around the city during the one to three-day visa-free period, China Eastern Airlines announced yesterday.
"The number of foreign passengers passing through Shanghai to other destinations is expected to increase with the inauguration of the policy," said Gao Jianrong, deputy general manager of ground service for China Eastern.
Some 500,000 foreign passengers of the Shanghai-based airline have stopped by the city this year under the current 48 hour visa-free policy.
The new policy extends visa-free stays in the city from 48 to 72 hours for passengers passing through to other destinations. Eligible countries include the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Germany, France and Russia, and the policy will apply to passengers with transit plane tickets to a third nation or region.
The policy is likely to be popular for visitors to Shanghai Disneyland, open around 2014.
The airline currently offers the packages only to its own passengers, but will soon add other Skyteam Airline Alliance members, including China Southern, Korean Air and Air France-KLM, said Zhang Qing, an official with the airline.
