Passengers face tighter air security

SOME passengers may wish to comb their hair or adjust their makeup before going through security after a new face-recognition photo system is adopted at local airports.
A local company yesterday told a transportation security forum that it had cooperated with the authorities to develop the first face-recognition system for air passengers boarding in China.
“The system is helpful in preventing illegal immigration and reducing other security risks at airports,” said Tong Hui, a manager at Shanghai Doudian Technologies Co, which joined forces with the Third Research Institute of the Ministry of Public Security to develop the system.
It takes pictures of passengers’ faces at security checkpoints and stores them in a database along with their boarding pass information.
When passengers submit their passes for scanning as they board their flight, a camera at the boarding gate captures their images again and compares their facial features with photos taken previously, said Tong.
“The ticket gates will open automatically only when facial features match,” he said.
