Plans to ease Metro rush hours

METRO Lines 1 and 2 will be using eight-car trains during the rush hours before the 2010 Shanghai Expo, the city's Metro authority said today.

All 53 trains on Metro Line 1 will have eight cars instead of six by the end of this year, while 37 trains on Metro Line 2 will be running eight car trains by the end of this month, Xinmin Evening News reported.

The increase is to cope with the increasing numbers of passengers as the Expo Metro network expands. The Metro now has 11 lines running over 420 kilometers. Four hundred trains are in use stopping at 280 stations.

In response to a call to help clean up the city's environment at the 600 day Expo countdown, the Metro authority introduced plans to renovate 164 stations and 320 trains.

As part of the plan, the authority will also introduce in People's Square station a new style of public toilet.

Metro workers are also being trained in service and language skills, the authority said.
