Plum rain season shows few signs of drawing to a close
IT’S the question on everyone’s lips: When will this year’s plum rain season finally end? The answer: Nobody knows.
The Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said last week it expected the annual torrents to draw to a close next Friday, but that confidence now seems to be waning.
According to Zhu Jiehua, a chief service officer at the bureau, there is nothing to suggest the season is nearing its end. And just to prove the point, a new wave of heavy downpours is set to drench the city from tomorrow night.
“The plum rain season usually ends around July 9 or 10, but in 1954 it lasted 58 days,” Zhu told Shanghai Daily.
This year’s season started on June 15, so for 2015 to become a record breaker, it would have to keep raining until August 13.
In the meantime, today should be mostly dry with occasional showers, with the mercury set to range between 22 and 25 degrees Celsius.
The air quality is set to be “excellent,” the bureau said.
The outlook will be similar tomorrow, before the arrival of the rains, which are set to remain through Tuesday.
The hot and sticky weather is expected to make a return on Wednesday, it said.
