Plum rain season starts today
GET ready to be soaked.
The plum rain season starts today and it will last about 20 days, weathermen said yesterday.
A stable rain belt has formed in the lower reaches of the Yangtze River and the city's annual rainy season will begin, the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau said.
For the next 10 days, rain will fall more often.
A thunderstorm is forecast late today. More rain will fall tomorrow and Monday. After a couple of days of overcast weather, the rain will return on Thursday and continue until next weekend, forecasters said.
Temperatures will hold steady into next week. Highs will range from 30 to 32 degrees Celsius with lows of 24 to 25 degrees.
This year's plum rain season is not expected to be as wet as usual. The bureau said it expects less than the average, 244 millimeters, rainfall during the season this year.
Scorching days with highs of more than 35 degrees Celsius may also occur in the period. The bureau advised people to check weather forecasts for thunderstorms and strong winds, and plan accordingly.
"People will feel uncomfortable these days because of the low air pressure and high humidity," said Man Liping, a forecaster with the bureau.
Forecasters said the plum rains have been different in recent years compared to the past. "Since 2000, rainstorms have become more common and it has tended to be much hotter. Before, the rain used to be more like a continuous drizzle," said Man.
