Police halt coupons rush

POLICE had to be called after a rush to grab free tourism coupons for Hangzhou City, capital of Zhejiang Province, in Shanghai yesterday.

The books were being handed out at the Bank of Hangzhou's two branches in the city - in Huangpu and Yangpu districts.

Although the coupons were not to be distributed until 2pm, some people started to queue up outside the banks from early morning.

After distribution began, police had to be called to maintain order at the Huangpu branch on Jiujiang Road.

There was a similar problem last week when authorities in Changzhou City, Jiangsu Province, tried to distribute coupons worth a total of 1 million yuan (US$146,274) at the Grand Gateway in Xujiahui area.

Distribution was halted yesterday after the event descended into chaos.

Hangzhou was handing out 135,000 coupon books worth 100 yuan each and valid until May 31.

The coupons are for 180 venues in Hangzhou and nearby cities such as Lin'an, Tonglu and Xiaoshan and included scenic areas, hotels and entertainment spots, the Hangzhou Tourism Commission said.

Meanwhile, Shanghai Sightseeing Bus Center has launched new discount packages to Changzhou, officials said yesterday.
