Police step in to thwart fare evaders
THE city's Metro operator said it has teamed up with police to crack down those who evade fares. About 0.16 percent of total passengers are fare evaders.
Shanghai Metro system with 11 lines and one line inside the Expo site handles more than 6 million passengers per day.
Fare evaders will be fined up to 50 yuan once caught, said a spokesperson for the Metro operator.
Many offenders skip fare during rush hours at some busy stations like People's Square, Xujiahui and Shanghai Railway Station.
Police has nabbed more than 1,770 people using fake passes in recent months.
