Police target overloaded vehicles
CITY traffic police caught 13 overloaded trucks within an hour during a weekend crackdown focusing on an area near the Middle Ring Road.
Police said overloaded trucks are a safety concern as such vehicles are more difficult to control and stop in emergencies. They also damage roads due to their excessive weight.
The Middle Ring Road is used by many cargo trucks, many of which are overloaded. Some were found transporting goods that more than doubled the vehicle's capacity, police said.
Police said they would continue these checks and set checkpoints at ramps leading to the ring road.
Offenders will be subject to a fine and suspension.
Drivers earn money based on the weight they transport, thus the payment system encourages them to take risks and overload their vehicles, police said.
Overloaded vehicles were responsible for dozens of fatal accidents this year and last.
