Post-holiday travelers aim for SE Asia, Taiwan

SOUTHEASTERN Asia and Taiwan are the most popular tour destinations for Shanghai travelers during the after-holiday period.

Tourism to Southeastern Asia, especially Thailand, is about 20 to 30 percent greater than last year for this period, which began Saturday and will last until the end of March.

Many people are taking advantage of the quick drop in airline and hotel prices since the Spring Festival.

"The price was about 10 percent lower than that of a common season," said Yu Weihua, deputy general manager of Shanghai China International Travel Service Co Ltd.

Thailand-bound tour packages now cost about 30 percent less than they did last week, travel service companies said.

Taiwan, as a newly opened tour destination to people on the Chinese mainland, is expected to be in favor for a long time.

The SCI Travel Service said it will send about 50 tour groups there - including more than 1,000 tourists for March, 20 to 30 percent more than last March.

"We expect the Taiwan-bound tourism will be hot still for two years," Yu said.
