Power failure disrupts Metro service downtown
A power failure hit some downtown areas in Shanghai this afternoon, stalling Metro Line 2 and forcing thousands of passengers to evacuate.
Metro officials said the breakdown was caused by a power surge on Line 2 after an initiative investigation. The service was restored at 1:48 pm.
The accident happened at about 1pm when power suddenly went out in several Metro Line 2 stations. The Metro operator reported the news 10 minutes later through its microblog on t.sina.com.
Metro Line 2 between Lujiazui Station and Zhongshan Park Station was affected. Some stations were closed due to power failure.
Trains were moving intermittently as power supply was unstable. The operator asked passengers in the train to stay calm and other commuters to take alternative transportation at about 1:20pm.
A 200,000-volt cable pit at the intersection of Huaihai Road and Huashan Road in Xuhui District caught fire at 12pm and was believed to be the cause of the power failure. The fire was put off quickly and no one was hurt in the accident.
Meanwhile, Metro Line 11 also reported delay of service between Jiangsu Road Station and Caoyang Road Station around noon due to equipment failure, according to xinmin.cn. The problem was fixed at 12:10 pm.
