Public transport takes green lead

SHANGHAI will set a green example through eco-friendly public transport vehicles and by encouraging motorists to buy low-emission autos, Mayor Han Zheng said yesterday.

"One of the keys to ignite the green auto sector is to industrialize the domestically researched technology," Han told local lawmakers in a panel discussion yesterday. "These vehicles are currently very expensive, which puts off buyers."

The public transport and taxi system stands out as the best platform to promote this technology, said Han.

Green buses are already on the roads of Shanghai, a legacy of the World Expo 2010 that ended on October 31. During the six-month event, 1,000 green vehicles were in service around the Expo site.

Local lawmakers suggested a series of measures to boost the green auto sector, including offering free licenses for eco-friendly cars to encourage the use of low-emission vehicles.

Eleven local lawmakers put forward a proposal asking for more support for the green auto sector during the ongoing session of the Shanghai People's Congress.
