Qingming is coming, so are the jams
CITY traffic will be worse than normal between March 25 and April 4 as an estimated 8 million people pay respects to departed family at cemeteries for Qinqming.
Qinqming falls on April 4 and the more than 8.2 million people visiting cemeteries are expected to bring an extra 880,000 vehicles onto the roads over the 11 days, the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau said.
The peak will be April 2-4, during the Qingming holiday, when almost five million are expected to sweep tombs.
The festival is also the time for spring outing, so the combination of tomb sweepers and tourists will make traffic jams worse, bureau officials warned.
April 4 is the height of Qingming, when 2.7 million people are expected to visit cemeteries and an extra 270,000 vehicles will be on the roads, the bureau said.
It warned districts such as Jiading, Qingpu and the Pudong New Area, where some big cemeteries are located, will be the most affected.
Expressways and trunks leading to cemeteries in Pudong, Jiading, Qingpu, Fengxian and Baoshan including S2, S4, G50, S5, G1501, Huaxia Elevated Road, Tanglu Road, Zhufeng Highway, Hunan Highway, Jiasong Rd N, Yueluo Road and Xinsiping Highway will see heavy congestion during the 11-day period.
The Tianguo Cemetery and Fule Shanzhuang Cemetery in Minhang will likely see heavy congestion and parking shortages because of nearby urban construction, the bureau said.
The city has 44 cemeteries and about 11,000 urns are expected to be buried during the 11 days.
To ease congestion, there will be extra shuttle buses taking tomb sweepers between Metro stations and cemeteries.
