Rail hubs beef up security
DEVICES that can detect hazardous liquids while still inside their containers have been installed at the city’s three main railway stations in a bid to improve security.
The machines use a technology called “quasistatic electrical tomography” to differentiate between potentially harmful liquids like gasoline, oil and alcohol, and harmless ones such as water, tea or fruit juice.
When the machines identify a banned liquid, a red bulb is illuminated to alert security guards to the potential risk.
Railway police said the machines were introduced on Friday at Shanghai Railway Station, Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station and Shanghai South Railway Station.
In the following four days, they helped to detect more than 21 kilograms of paint, 80 cans of hairspray and several canisters of liquid butane.
The machines will help speed up security checks and avoid disputes, police said.
