Rain returns for weekend and next week
AFTER a brief respite this afternoon, rain will return to the city this weekend and should continue to at least the middle of next week, weathermen said yesterday.
Temperatures will remain low in the next few days. The maximum expected temperature today is 9 degrees Celsius, with a minimum of 5 degrees, according to the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau.
On the weekend the temperature may get up to 12 degrees from lows of 3 to 7 degrees, forecasters said.
The temperature will not change much next week as the cold front is relatively weak. But there will be plenty of rain from a warm, wet southwestern current. During the last 10 days of February forecasters expect two to three times more rainfall than usual.
Heavy fog hit the city yesterday afternoon, reducing visibility to less than 500 meters in Qingpu and Songjiang districts, forecasters said.
Air traffic was more affected than water traffic, according to the transport authority.
Hongqiao Airport reported it had to suspend dozens of flights from 1:30pm to 2:20pm yesterday because of poor visibility. More than 20 planes heading to the airport had to be diverted to nearby airports including Pudong International Airport, said the Shanghai Airport Authority.
The Pudong airport implemented its special landing program for poor visibility at 6am but traffic was operating as normal as of late yesterday.
Passenger ferries to local islands had to reduce speed because of the fog at the mouth of the Yangtze River, said the Wusong maritime safety administration.
