Record temperatures keep city boiling

THE average temperature for June in Shanghai was the highest for 58 years, weathermen said.

The average temperature in June reached 26.3 degrees Celsius, 2.5 degrees higher than the average 23.8 for the same period in recent years, according to the China Meteorological Administration.

The average temperature in China was 20.1 degrees, 0.7 degrees higher than the average for the same period in recent years,

Today it will be cloudy with the temperature hovering between 23 and 29 degrees in the city. The cloudy, comfortable weather is expected to last till Sunday with temperatures ranging between 24 and 32 degrees.

Yesterday rainstorms hit Chongming, Baoshan and Jiading with 108 millimeters falling in Chongming from dawn to 4pm. The temperature dropped to 29.2 degrees.

From Sunday to Tuesday a massive rainstorm hit the middle and downstream areas of the Yangtze River and the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau in southwestern China.

Six people died, one is missing and 27,925 residents were evacuated after thunderstorms hit Chongqing Municipality. Altogether 1.29 million people were affected, Xinhua News Agency reported last night.

Wuhan City was awash yesterday as the heaviest rain in 27 years hit the city with 147 millimeters falling in 24 hours to 8am yesterday.

The China Meteorological Administration issued an orange rainstorm alert at 6pm last night for Yunnan, Guizhou, Guangxi, Hunan, Jiangxi, Anhui, Zhejiang and Fujian Provinces today.
