Road scale targets overloaded trucks

TENS of thousands of overloaded trucks illegally travel along busy Zhongchun Road in Minhang District every year, but that may change with the introduction of an automatic weighing system buried under the road, say police.
In the past two months, about 1,900 overloaded trucks have been caught by police using the new system at the intersection of Zhongchun Road and Gudai Road, officials said yesterday.
The system, which is supported by surveillance cameras that photograph plates, is able to exactly measure loads in real time as trucks pass over it.
“Previously, we stopped trucks for checks based on suspicion, but with the help of technology our enforcement will be significantly more efficient,” said Geng Hua, a traffic policeman at the intersection.
Police officials said the automatic weighing system in Minhang will eventually be installed on elevated roads and major bridges over the Huangpu River.
The system cost about 5 million yuan (US$750,000), but it will pay for itself in time due to reduced labor costs, according to officials.
