Road to cut time to Qidong

MOTORISTS can expect much smoother driving between downtown Shanghai and Qidong, a major city in neighboring Jiangsu Province, thanks to a new expressway that will cut the driving time by more than half when it opens next June.

The company building the new highway announced yesterday that it has completed the main structure of the last section of the expressway and is ready to open it to traffic next year.

Currently, drivers must spend about 3.5 hours on a trip from the center of Shanghai to Qidong. But the new route running across the mouth of the Yangtze River will shorten travel time to only 1.5 hours.

The six-lane highway is an extension of the national expressway between Shanghai and the city of Xi'an, in the mid-western part of the country. The new expressway starts from the current highway's end at the Yangtze River Bridge-Tunnel on Chongming island and stretches to Qidong.

The bridge-tunnel expressway links the island to the Pudong New Area, so the future expressway is expected to give a big boost to traffic efficiency between Pudong and Jiangsu Province.
