Road workers take cue from Weibo tweet
Workers repair a sunken section of Tiantong Road in Hongkou District this morning after a Weibo microblogger posted a photo of a cavity in the road at 8:40am today. Two brooms were inserted into the gaping hole to warn people.
Road workers arrived at about 11am and began to dig up the road at the intersection with Sichuan Road N.
The road was undermined by a leaking water pipe that eroded earth underneath the road surface. The water pipe will be fixed today or tomorrow.
"Road sinking usually happens in the rainy season," said a road maintenance manager surnamed Ding at the scene. "It's a common occurrence in rainy weather."
