Seats cut to make more room on Line 16

TRAINS running on Metro Line 16 will have more room in the future as the subway operator has decided to remove some of their seats.

The Shanghai Shentong Group said yesterday it will remove eight seats from each of the trains’ three carriages.

The move is necessary as the service cannot cope with demand on the line, which was extended last year. The roomier trains will be able to accommodate about 60 more people, the company said.

Line 16 users regularly complain about overcrowding, especially during the rush hour. About 20 trains currently run on the line.

Before announcing its plan to remove the seats, Shentong said it would double the line’s capacity by adding three more carriages to each train. It has not yet done this, however.

Late last year, the line was extended to Longyang Road in the Pudong New Area, an interchange station with Lines 2 and 7.

The extension led to a 60 percent rise in the number of passengers traveling on the line every working day.
