Sensors in place to thwart manhole cover thieves

AUTHORITIES in Jiading District are putting sensors on manhole covers in a trial scheme to try to prevent them being stolen and also as a flood precaution, officials said yesterday.
The sensors are being placed on the back of manhole covers for sewage and rainwater pipelines so they can monitor the water level in the tunnel as well as detect if the covers are removed, the district government said.
Once the covers were moved or the water exceeds the alert level, the sensors will send alarms to the mobile phones of maintenance workers and officials with the district water authority.
Not only can thieves be tracked more easily, but the water authority can discharge pump vehicles to areas under threat from being flooded, said an official with the government.
Three such sensors have been installed at Jiading New City, which is prone to flooding in low-lying areas. A total of 100 will eventually be put in place, said an official with Jiading New City management company.
Due to their low cost — 100 yuan (US$15) each — the sensor will be rolled out across the city after the trial, the district government said.
Shanghai has about 6.5 million manholes, and thousands of covers go missing every year.
