Shanghai, Taipei vow new era of cooperation
SHANGHAI and Taipei government officials yesterday signed a package of memorandums aiming to advance cooperation in the fields of education, sanitary and medical services, and tourism.
Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin, completing a two-day visit to town, attended the annual Shanghai-Taipei City Forum yesterday with Shanghai Mayor Han Zheng.
Han said in his keynote speech that Shanghai welcomes more Taiwanese companies to make investments in Shanghai and that the city would provide more conveniences for Taiwanese to live and work in Shanghai.
He also told the Taipei visitors that the local government would put a strong emphasis on building more budget housing projects to improve living conditions for local residents.
Hau said at the forum that the two cities had managed to raise their urban management levels after successfully hosting the Shanghai World Expo and the Taipei Flora Expo over the past year.
He added that he's looking forward to closer business cooperation.
Hau also said Shanghai tourists were welcome to visit Taipei and that the Taipei locals would treat their Shanghai friends with the best hospitality.
Since the island government started a program in June to allow individual tourists from Beijing, Shanghai and Xiamen to visit Taiwan, about 400 Shanghai locals have made visits to the island.
"The new practice has only just started and the number of individual tourists to the island is yet not big. But I am very confident that in near future, both the traffic of individual tourists and quality of their island trips would boost significantly," Hau said.
Hau was to return to the island later yesterday.
