Shanghai's traffic woes unchanged despite Car-free Day
TRAFFIC remained snarled in downtown Shanghai during the rush hour this morning although today is the Car-free Day and about 200,000 car owners have vowed to take public transport to go to work.
The car ban, observed in some roads in Xuhui District from 9am to 4pm today, is seen as more symbolic than practical.
Traffic police and volunteers are seen guiding passing vehicles away from the restricted area near the Huangpu River – a place that sees few cars on normal days.
However, streams of cars stalled in other places, especially on elevated highways, which did not see any traffic improvement on the Car-free Day.
Metro operator said it recorded passenger increases at some Metro stations with the car ban taking effect.
