Sleet, snow and mercury set to fall

AUTHORITIES are gearing up for an expected cold snap that is set to bring snow to the city tonight and could push the mercury down to as low as minus 10 degrees Celsius next week.

Utility providers have been told to adjust their production schedules to ensure the public has sufficient water, gas and electricity during the chilly period, and also to set up specialist teams to tackle any emergencies caused by the drop in temperature.

Likewise, the city’s traffic authorities said they will be on call around the clock to keep people moving on what could become treacherous roads over the coming days.

Sleet and snow were forecast to hit the city overnight and the wintry conditions are likely to remain until Saturday, forecasters said yesterday.

The mercury today and tomorrow will range between 2 and 4 degrees.

Saturday will be significantly colder, with a low of minus 3 degrees in some parts, before falling to minus 6 on Sunday and as low as minus 10 in rural areas on Monday.

People are advised to stay indoors during the worst of the weather and, where possible, make sure any exposed water pipes are lagged with a suitable material.

Meanwhile, Zhu Xifeng, the head of the city’s relief stations, said homeless shelters will remain open 24 hours a day over the coming days for anyone who needs them.

Police officers, urban management and civil affairs authorities will distribute quilts, warm clothes and hot food to those who prefer not to go to a shelter, he said.

At the city’s two airports, precautions are being taken to prevent the closure of runways during the frosty conditions.

More than 50 plows and other snow-clearing vehicles have been put on standby, officials said yesterday.
