Smart system dispenses medication
FIFTEEN local hospitals have introduced an intelligent system for dispensing medication for outpatients, aiming to cut waiting times and improve overall efficiency, Shanghai Pharmaceutical Company, their supplier, said yesterday.
According to the company, the scheme will be expanded across the city in future.
With the new system, a hospital pharmacy takes only 10 to 15 seconds to handle a prescription, cutting the manual dispensing time by 30 to 40 percent, according to Shanghai General Hospital.
The prescriptions are sent to collection windows automatically, giving pharmacists more time to talk to patients about how to take their medication and what side-effects they might experience.
With efficiency improved, the hospital’s Songjiang branch has been able to reduce its number of collection windows from eight to four.
“Patients are spending less time queuing and the error rate in dispatching is also lower than before,” said a hospital officer, surnamed Hu.
According to Shanghai Pharmaceutical Company, the system can manage the processing of all medications at hospitals, automatically ordering more when supplies begin to run low.
