Southern China's rain affects travelers

MORE than 20,000 passengers at the Shanghai South Railway Station were affected by the heavy rains in southern China with their trains leaving town delayed or canceled on the weekend.
Shanghai's long-distance bus services to southern China cities were also at risk.
Rail passengers suffered the most as thousands were stranded at the city's two railway stations which have canceled 33 services up until tomorrow.
More than 8,000 tried to get their rail tickets refunded. Rail officials said the refund process at the station "was in order" despite the huge passenger turnout. They opened extra waiting areas for passengers.
The bus routes are no better than the railways.
The Shanghai South Long-distance Bus Station, the city's main terminal to southern China, said yesterday that five bus services would be canceled today.
The affected buses are scheduled to go to southern China's Fujian and Jiangxi provinces. Passengers can get ticket refunds at the station.
Another bus service to Fujian's Yong'an was delayed yesterday for over two hours.
The station has added more than 10 bus services from Saturday to carry 510 passengers who could not leave by rail.
But the bus station said this week's extra services can't be guaranteed as "the road situation in the south is not good."
"First we should ensure that the regular operations are fine," said bus station official Shi Weiwei.
